Nicole Lane chalks up another win

Saturday was the 27th annual Viking Opener cross country meet at Spring Lake and El Molino’s Nicole Lane continued her winning ways taking an incredible 30 seconds off her time from last year finishing in 11:41 to win the Junior/Senior race. “I trained a lot harder this summer than I ever had before putting in 7-8 miles a day.” said Lane. “I had planned to pace off of Carrillo’s Lauren Kraus today but she did not run but Ashley Moffet (Casa Grande) went out fast as she usually does and pulled me through the first mile in 5:40 as compared to 6:10 last year.” When asked about goals for the season Lane said, "I'm hoping for top five at state and a win at North Coast Section." Sonoma Academy’s Katy Lee finished in 2nd (11:52) and should be someone to watch this year at the state level for her small school division. Moffet finished 3rd (12:04) with Vintage's Mackenzie Mills in 4th (12:10.) Piner's Kyra Johnson, running the trails for the first time as a senior, was the fastest NBL runner at 12:22. Kraus skipped this meet after taking a spill in training this week but is expected to be rested and ready for Stanford next weekend. Carrillo was lead today by Brynna Thigpen in 6th (12:25), with Santa Rosa's Sadia Ibrahim rounded out the top seven (12:43). Carrillo's Freshman sensation Andrea Natoli held off Windsor's Victoria Tomaszewski to win the Frosh/Soph race in 12:25 to 12:29. At the begining of the summer Natoli had planned on playing soccer as she always does but “After training with the cross country team during the summer to get in shape for soccer I decided instead to keep running with them.” said Natoli. "I was pleased with myself today." said Natoli, "because I was having calf problems coming into this race." By Jim Crowhurst
